Reallocation and productivity during the Great Recession: evidence from French manufacturing firms

Abstract According to the ‘cleansing hypothesis’, recessions are periods in which productivity-enhancing reallocation intensifies, shifting resources away from less efficient more firms at a faster pace. Does Great Recession of 2008–2010 fit this view? We address question, studying case French manufacturing sector. Based on panel firms, built by matching several data sources, we analyze dynamics relation between productivity and over period 2002–2013. Our results show that, during Recession, productive decreased their advantage with respect terms both employment growth probability survive, disagreement cleansing hypothesis. This attenuation was significantly driven trade collapse credit crunch that were associated crisis, while it does not emerge depend labor-market regulations anti-crisis policies.
